Wacky Wednesday

Happy Leap Year! In honor of today as well as Dr. Seuss's birthday on Friday, it's Wacky Wednesday at preschool. Emily has never really been picky about her clothes, but last night, when trying to choose a wacky outfit today, she definitely made her preference known.

"Mom, I like it, but it's not wacky."

"It's wacky but I don't want to wear it."

"I already told you I want to wear THAT one!"

Can you just hear the attitude? Gah! It continued this morning.

"Mom, I don't think these pigtails are wacky. They're too straight!"

Thankfully that one was easily fixed with the suggestion of using two different colored princess hairbands. Whew. I think this has gave me the tiniest taste of what's to come in, oh, about 10 years. Yikes.

She did look cute, though. In a wacky way, of course.

Mom-Mom Mondays

Mondays are "Mom-Mom's Day" around our house, and most weeks, while Mom-Mom is here watching the girls, Grandmom and Grandpop pop by for a visit before lunchtime. One of their favorite things to do is build forts in the sunroom, and it's one of those things that Daddy and I leave as something that's just for them.

I can never say it enough how special I think it is that they have this time with their great-grandparents. We are so thankful to have them in our lives.

This Cake Is Bananas

Well, technically strawberries, but B-A-N-A-N-A-S! I haven't had this cake since I was a kid (and Aunt Suzy used to get it for nearly every family function), and it was every bit as good as I remembered it today at Bonnie's shower. We had a laugh at all of us taking home giant slices, especially the fact that Mimi, the only one without any kids at home, took the biggest slice of all.

But enough about the cake! We were there to celebrate Bonnie and Mark and their soon-to-be baby boy! It was a great party, and Aunt Suzy and the rest of Bonnie's family did a fabulous job planning it. I was happy to be a part of it!

Marlo seemed pretty happy too. She's getting a baby brother, after all!

A Family Portrait

...would be nice, except Em decided to draw one of her and Kate with Aunt Erin and Uncle John instead.

My feelings might be hurt if it weren't so darn cute.

Picnic in the Park

It was such a nice day today that Emily had the brilliant idea of having a picnic at the playground. So we packed up some pb&j, loaded the girls into the wagon, and trekked to the park. (Kate grabbed her hat on the way out the door and insisted on wearing it because she's funny like that.)

I really, really cannot wait until spring!

Valentine's Dinner

Between getting home from Paris last night and having preschool this morning, I didn't have time to make pink pancakes like I did last year, and this year I tried to do the next best thing for dinner: sweet potato hearts.

The girls seemed to love them just as much as they did the pancakes, although I know if given the choice, they'd choose pancakes any day. I ended up eating the scraps which would have been cute in their own right if trimmed up a bit, but that would have only left us with more scraps, and scrimpy ones at that.

You know they tasted just as good.

Heartfelt Wishes

...for a very Happy Valentine's Day!

We were so excited to be home to celebrate with our girls today, and they were just excited to have their brand-new "Paris" shirts to wear for the occasion. Thanks for the timeliness, babyGap!

So Much for Missing Us

It sure seems like our girls had plenty of fun without us. I was certain that we'd be hearing a daily meltdown check at the end of each day, especially from Kate, but as everyone assured us before we left, the girls did just fine while we were gone.

As James and I were leaving last Wednesday, it had just started to snow, which gave the girls a good distraction as Mom-Mom got them ready to go out to play for a bit. I had dutifully set out their snowsuits in case of a snowstorm, but for such a light dusting, it seems their rain boots were good enough for these snow bunnies.

On Friday morning, Mom-Mom got to enjoy one of the girls' favorite chores: changing the sheets. I know Daddy sometimes wonders why washing the sheets sometimes takes me all day, and this is often a contributing factor!

On Saturday, Mimi and Pop-Pop took the girls to a basketball team between Aunt Erin's school and my cousin Patrick's school. (Patrick's school won both the boys' and girls' games. Sorry, Aunt Erin!) Even better, yesterday Mimi and Pop-Pop again joined up with Aunt Erin and Uncle John and took the girls to the Please Touch Museum. I mean, really, with all that fun, I can't blame the girls for not missing us!

Paris Jour Quatre

Today we had a lazy start, which worked in my favor because I'd been wanting to try the famous Berthillon ice cream parlor, conveniently located right down the street from our hotel, but hadn't had a chance to squeeze it into our jam-packed itinerary. Our late start meant I could pop in just before lunch without the shame of trying to eat ice cream for breakfast. Not that there's anything shameful about a frozen treat as delicious as this one!

Our plan for the day was to spend the morning exploring Montmarte and the afternoon wandering Saint Germain. Since we already covered Saint Germain during our walk to the Orsay, our afternoon was wide open; hence, the lazy start. When we finally arrived in Montmarte, the first stop, of course, was Sacré-Coeur which we've already seen from afar from both the Arc de Triomphe and Tour Eiffel.

We were able to climb our final flight of narrow spiral stairs to the dome to see the city from its largest hill. Despite the crowds on the steps outside, we were alone up there except for one other couple which made it seem almost like our little secret.

After touring the inside, we walked to a smaller church practically next door, Saint-Pierre de Montmarte. By now I was not at all surprised that James wanted to peek inside, despite the fact that this little church was not nearly as impressive as the other ones we've seen.

We walked around Montmarte a little bit more before we realized that if we wanted to make our next stop, we needed to head back to the Métro immediately, with just a quick pause at the bottom of the hill to see the Moulin Rouge.

The reason we ended up cutting our visit to Montmarte short was because James decided at the last minute that he'd like to see the Catacombes de Paris which are on the complete opposite side of the city. We made it all the way over there and were second in line when they cut us off for closing. He was sad.

I cheered him up by finding him another church. This time, Saint-Sulpice.

We then decided to walk to the Jardin du Luxembourg, which we hadn't planned on visiting knowing that, like the Tuileries, it wouldn't have quite the same splendor in the dead of winter. It ended up being a great idea, because at the entrance to the gardens, we found a temporary Cézanne exhibit at the Musée du Luxembourg. Bonus Impressionism!

Our walk back toward the hotel led us to cute alley off our favorite street from our first day here, rue Saint-André des Arts. We found a nice spot for dinner right off the alley, but since it was still a little early for the French, we decided to waste some time in the corner pub, where James ordered himself a beer (and one for me too) for the first time in what might have been a decade.

We had so much fun hanging out at the pub before dinner that we decided to go back for a night cap afterwards too. Who knew having a few drinks could be so fun? I did, and I think James remembered too.

On our walk home we took one last (blurry) shot to mark the end of our trip. (We did spend the night at a bar, after all.) Au revoir, Paris!
