Her big day is here! It's crazy how much they change in a year, but it's so fun to watch them grow ... and even more fun to watch them smash frosting in their hair.
Sloane is getting so big, in fact, that she's almost walking! Emily was more than happy to help her little cousin practice.
After walking off all that cake, it was time for presents!
I think the birthday girl had lots of fun, and I think we all had fun seeing the four granddaughters down the shore together for the first time.
So happy birthday, Sloanie! We love you so much and can't wait to celebrate many more birthdays with you!

Couch Cuddles and Cousins
We took a day trip down the shore for a belated Christmas celebration with the other side of my family, but before we headed into that mayhem, we got to spend a nice afternoon relaxing at the house and spending some time with Ella.
I mean, how sweet is she?!

How We Survived the Hurricane
Hurricane Sandy ravaged its way up the East Coast yesterday, and after the damage of Katrina seven years ago and even Irene last year, we all now know that these storms have to be taken seriously. Mimi and Pop-Pop spent the weekend at the shore preparing the beach house for the storm. They left on Sunday, well before the storm hit, but still saw the beginnings of what was to come.
Meanwhile, back at home, we weren't hit too hard, but knowing our creek has flooded our backyard in just a heavy rain storm not once but twice, we knew we had to be prepared here as well.
I joked that we were baking up a storm yesterday, but really I just wanted to make sure I baked the cookies for the girls' Halloween parties while we still had power. The girls were more than happy to oblige.
During Hurricane Irene last summer, we were concerned about both flooding and falling trees and slept with the girls on the family room floor to be safe. Since we survived without any flooding then, our concern this time shifted primarily to falling trees, so we decided to camp out in the basement. The girls loved it. Daddy and I, not so much.
Today we should have been celebrating Halloween with the girls at their preschool parades and parties, but instead we're still cooped up inside. It's a good thing we picked up a few extra pumpkins at Linvilla, because they were a perfect distraction!
We're so very lucky to have survived without any damage. Now our focus can shift back to Halloween. Here's hoping trick-or-treating is still on schedule tomorrow!

A Dismal Finale
It looks like the weather isn't letting up even for the last weekend of the summer, so we spent our last day on the beach under overcast skies. Not that it matters to the girls, especially when they have their friends Logan and Addison there to play with them.
It's best we take it easy today anyway, considering Kate gave us all another scare last night falling up the stairs and ending up with a cut lip and a crooked tooth. Do not let her cuteness fool you. The girl is too much trouble for her own good! I still take pity on her and her swollen lip, though. Poor baby. At least she didn't let it ruin her fun today!
With the dreary end to our summer, I think it's only fitting that the girls chose to mark the occasion in such fashion. After all, I wanted to pout too. It's my birthday weekend, and I want some sunshine, dang it!
Actually, scratch that. We are so ready for fall!

Open Water Swim
Two years ago and again last year, we noticed some sort of swim race around the marsh island in front of the beach house. It turns out that it's the Cedar Island 5k swim, and this year James (along with his friend Seth and my cousin Colleen) decided to enter it.
Since the race goes with the tide, it ended up taking just about as long as an Ironman swim despite being nearly 3/4 mile longer. I mean, look at that smile on Colleen's face; how hard could it be?! (Kidding, James. Kidding!)

Staying Afloat
It's another not-a-good-beach-day sort of day, so instead we took the girls to Aunt Suzy's pool for a little this morning. Apparently Kate's whale floatie is not enough; she also needed a ride in the boat with a little help from Emily!
