Back in the Game

It's been almost two years since Emily took that soccer class, but today she got back into it at a soccer camp in the park near our neighborhood. She was so excited to wear her new shin guards and princess sneakers and bring her pink soccer ball!

When we got there, she spotted her friends Caitie, Pearson, Parker, and Evan, and when they sat together for introductions with Coach Leah, she was her usual chatterbox self and got so excited showing off her soccer ball.

Just like I remember about soccer practice, they started with a warm-up and ran across the field and back. After that, they grabbed their soccer balls and dribbled across the field and back. Emily started off really well, but between trying to keep up with the bigger kids and struggling in the heat, she had a little meltdown but got back into the game after some princess talk with Coach Leah.

After snack time, they separated the kids by age and had them scrimmage. Emmy was with the other three-year-olds, and they played boys against girls. Even though the girls were outnumbered, they kicked the boys' butts. Caitie really dominated, but Emmy scored a goal too!

While the kids were playing, Kate and I tried to stay cool in the shade, and she kept herself entertained first with snacks and later with some self-portraiture. I think she's taking after Emily with her photo-taking skills!

After camp, just because playing soccer for two hours in the hot sun wasn't enough, Emmy asked to go to the playground, where at least we all got to play in the shade for a bit. We also ran into another friend, Grace, who is two months older than Kate. We've seen her around the playground a couple times recently, and it's nice to have someone Kate's size for once!

With so much time spent outside in the heat wave this morning, we'll need the rest of the afternoon in the air-conditioning to cool ourselves off so we can do it all again tomorrow!
